REAP In Your Region: Region 9

For the next six weeks, INHF will be sharing the impact Iowa's REAP program has in communities throughout the state. The Iowa DNR is hosting regional REAP Assemblies until Nov. 5, local meetings that allow residents to learn more about REAP and play a role in the programs policies and projects.

Nahant Marsh

Nestled within the city of Davenport is an environmental haven. For over 150 species of birds, more than 400 plant species, and numerous animals, fish and insects, Nahant Marsh is home. These habitats have been protected in part through a 2001 REAP funding grant. Marsh visitors have the opportunity to hike, bike, picnic, ski and more, and the education center offers environmental programs for nature-lovers of all ages.

Wildcat Den State Park 

At Wildcat Den State Park, it's easy to fall back in time. Located 15 miles west of Davenport, the park is perfect for a weekend camping trip, a daylong hiking trek or a quick escape from the real world. Visitors can use the park's renowned trail system to check out historic sites,—such as the Pine Creek Grist Mill. Nestled in the eastern part of the park, the mill is one of the last examples of 19th century grist mills in the country, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. In the last decade, over $115,000 of REAP funding has gone to mill repair and restoration. The park has also received funding for trails, parking lots and park additions.
