Red Rock Prairie Trail

Connecting Monroe, Prairie City and Mitchellville along a 16-mile corridor.

The development of this trail extension, connecting Monroe, Prairie City and Mitchellville, is part of the long range goal of linking Saylorville Lake north of Des Moines with Lake Red Rock and Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge.

The segment between Monroe and Prairie City was completed in August 2022 and is now open to the public! More funding is needed to complete the segment connecting Mitchellville and Prairie City.

Prairie City Trail

The Red Rock Prairie Trail will run a on former rail corridor from Monroe to the Mitchellville city limits, covering 16 miles. INHF assisted in the acquisition of nearly 12 miles of this corridor and continues to assist in fundraising efforts.  The development of this multi-trail extension is part of a long-anticipated goal for the Central Iowa Trail System: linking the Des Moines Metro to Lake Red Rock, Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge and Saylorville Lake.
