Blue vervain is a plant native to Iowa that blooms in mid to late summer. It is bluish-purple in color and can commonly be found in wet areas like marshes, wet prairies and streambanks. Blue vervain has a history of being used in a variety of folk medicines. In European folklore, people used to wear it as necklaces to produce good luck, help ward off snakes and cure headaches.
